UPDATE May 12, 1:35 PM: Water break fixed, water to return in the next few days.
Oakland County residents who are under a boil-water alert and water use restrictions as a result of a massive water main break early Sunday morning may pick up free 1-gallon jugs of water daily at a few sites:
Great Lakes Water Authority (GWLA) trucks will be at these sites from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm daily for residents of Auburn Hills, Lake Orion, Orion Township, and Rochester Hills. Residents may get two 1-gallon jugs per visit.
Rochester Hills is distributing one case of water per person in the household (max of 6), from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. The water is available to residents of any of the affected communities:
Orion Township residents who are unable to leave their homes may request water delivery by calling 248-391-0304.
Authorities are asking people who live in northern Auburn Hills, Orion Township, Lake Orion, and Rochester Hills to limit water usage today (avoid long showers, running dishwashers and washing machines, and watering the grass). Residents of Pontiac are being asked to restrict outdoor water use, which could result in lower water pressure for surrounding communities and a lower water supply for firefighters.
To boil water for safe drinking, bring water to a roiling boil for at least 1 minute. Let it cool for 15 minutes before drinking. Store the water in a clean, covered container in the refrigerator.
Bottle refills and restrooms
In addition to the GWLA water distribution sites, Oakview Middle School in Oakland Township has opened its doors to residents of those communities to use its intact water supply to fill up bottles. The school, at 917 Lake George Rd., is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm Monday and Tuesday.
Showers and laundry facilities
The water main will be replaced, which may take several weeks.
