The failure to pass a budget in Washington means funding for many federal assistance programs has lapsed. That includes SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which provides food subsidies to 1.4 million Michiganders. As of November 1, SNAP benefits have been put on paused.
Some 10% of older adults and adults with disabilities in the six-county region AgeWays serves – Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, and Washtenaw counties – benefit from SNAP. Of those, nearly 40% of households have one adult who is at least 60 years old, and nearly 58% have one or more people with a disability.
SNAP recipients get a Bridge card to buy groceries and to get cash benefits. Michigan receives some $260 million monthly from the federal government to fund SNAP.
Where to find food assistance
AgeWays has compiled food assistance resources that may be able to help older adults who rely on SNAP.
United Way provides emergency food to residents throughout southeast Michigan. Call 211 to get connected.
The Food Bank Council of Michigan in Lansing operates a statewide food assistance helpline that can help locate local food resources. Go to fbcmich.org or call 517-485-1202 weekdays.
Forgotten Harvest serves several areas in southeast Michigan. Go to forgottenharvest.org/find-food/ to locate mobile food pantry sites.
Focus: HOPE distributes food at sites in Macomb, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties. Call 313-494-4600 or go to focushope.edu for more information.
Congregate meals may also be an option. AgeWays helps funds these meals that happen at senior centers and other community venues throughout our six-county region. Volunteer donations are encouraged for these meals.
