Campaign serves as national model to help LGBT older adults
The Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B) is one of three southeast Michigan Area Agencies on Aging to establish a precedent-setting system to more effectively serve people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). The initiative was created by the LGBT Older Adult Coalition, a project of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan. The Detroit Area Agency on Aging and the Senior Alliance are also part of the collaboration.
The call center staff at all three Area Agencies on Aging were trained on how to identify and speak with LGBT older adults in a culturally appropriate and sensitive manner. Research indicates that LGBT older adults are often reluctant to contact agencies for assistance.
“Area Agencies on Aging are places people frequently call for information about aging supports. With Michigan being the first state to formally work within this system, the results of this project will have implications for agencies across the U.S.,” said project director Kathleen LaTosch. Collaboration staff will present an overview of their work at the annual American Society on Aging Conference in Chicago in March.
If you are or know of an older adult who is lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans- gender, and in need of assistance, please contact the AAA 1-B today
at 800-852-7795.
